At the start of your driving test your examiner will ask you two of the following questions. It is important for you to read and learn them, not only for your driving test, But also to help maintain, keep your car legal and to prevent accident and injury. Your driving instructor will be happy to teach you all of the following before you take your driving test.

Oil Level

Open the bonnet and identify where you would check the engine oil level and tell me how you would check that the engine has sufficient oil? also where do you top-up the engine with oil, if required?

 

A: Open the bonnet, identify the dipstick and then explain how you would then check the engine oil level against the max and min markers on the dipstick. Also identify the oil filler cap where you would top-up the engine oil. 

 

      

Coolant Level

Open the bonnet, identify where you would check the engine coolant level and tell me how you would check that the engine has the correct level of coolant?

A:Identify the Max and Min level markings on the header tank and describe how you would top the coolant level up if required.

  

 

Windscreen Washer

Identify where the windscreen washer reservoir is and tell me how you would check the windscreen reservoir level?

 

A:Identify the level and explain how to top the reservoir up with washer fluid 

 

 

Brake Fluid Reservoir

Open the bonnet, identify where the brake fluid reservoir is and tell me how you would check that you have a safe level of hydraulic brake fluid?

 

A: Identify the reservoir, check level against Max and Min markers on the side of the reservoir.

 

Brake Lights

Tell me how you would check the brake lights are working on this car? I can assist you, if you need to switch the ignition on please don't start the car.

 

A:Operate the brake pedal, make use of reflections in windows/garage doors ect, or ask someone to help.

  

Test Brakes

Tell me how you would check that the brakes are working before the start of a journey?

 

A:Brakes should not be spongy or slack. Brakes should be tested as you set off, and when you use the brakes your car should not pull to either side.

 

Tyre Pressures

Tell me where you would find the information for recommended tyre pressures for this car and how tyre pressures should be checked?

 

A:Use a tyre pressure gage, check and adjust pressures when tyres are cold, remember spare and re-fit valve caps. Refer to manufacturer's guide for tyre pressure.

            

Tyre Tread Depth

Tell me how you would check the tyres to ensure they have sufficient tread depth and that their general condition is safe to use on the road?

 

Remember to ask your driving instructor to help you if you are struggling with any of the show and tell questions.

 

A:Make sure their is not cuts or bulges, with a minimum of 1.6mm of tread depth across the central three quarter's of the breadth of the tyre and around the entire outer and inner circumference.

 

 Power Steering

Show me/explain how you would check that the power assisted steering is working before you start a journey?

A:Start your engine and slowly and gently move your steering wheel from side to side. If this is very easy to do, your power steering is working correctly. If it feels heavy, this would indicate a power steering fault.

 

Direction Indicators

Show me how you would check that the direction indicators are working correctly?

A:apply the indicators or hazard warning switch and then walk round your vehicle and check that each indicator is working. 

                               

The Horn

Show me how you would check that your horn is working correctly? (Off road only)

 

A:Press the horn (off road only)

  

Hand Brake

Show me how you would check the hand brake for excessive wear?

 

A:Demonstrate by applying the hand brake lever fully and ensure that it secures itself and is not at the end of its working travel.

 

Head Restraint

Tell me how you would make sure that your head restraint is adjusted so that it provides the best protection in the event of an accident.

 

A:the head restraint should be adjusted so the rigid part of the head restraint is at least as high as eye or top of ears and as close to the back of your head.

 

Demister Controls

Show me how you would set the demister controls to demist the car windows effectively ( front, side and rear windows)

 

A:Set all demister controls, fan temp ( Hot or Cold ) and direction. Also use the rear heated window control.

 

Rear Fog Lights

Show me how you would switch on the rear fog light and explain when you would use the rear fog light?

A:Turn on ignition (if necessary) turn on dipped headlights and then turn on rear fog lights. (Refer to manufacturers guide for your vehicle). Then tell your examiner that you would use the fog lights if visibility is below 100meters. 

  

Anti Lock Braking

Tell me how you would know if there was a problem with the anti lock braking system?

A: The ABS warning light should illuminate on the console if there is a problem with the ABS system.

  

Headlights and Tail Lights

Tell me how you would know if the headlights and rear lights are working correctly?

A: Switch on the headlights and you may needs to switch the ignition on and explain how you would walk round the car to make sure they are all working correctly.

                   

Main Beam (Lights)

Show me how you would switch from dipped to main beam and explain how you would know it was on main beam?

A: Switch to main beam and explain that you can look for the main beam warning light. 

  

Windscreen Wash

Show me how you would clean the windscreen using the windscreen wipers and washers?

Operate the washers (switch on ignition if necessary)
